PRODUCTION THAT IS CONSIDERATE OF OUR IMPACT ON THE PLANET

Sustainability

CRAFTED TO LAST FOR GENERATIONS

Our impact on the environment is at the front and centre of our designs, material choices and production methods.

1. Designing for permanance

We ignore trends and take a slow fashion approach. We design from a place of freedom and focus on form factors that can stand the test of time.

2. Sourcing responsible materials

Our leather is sourced from tanneries which employ responsible leather production. We have four main suppliers of leather, namely; African Gameskin, Leatherrite, Whatnot and Crest Leather. Crest Leather is a member of the Leather Working Group and Sustainable Leather Foundation.

Additionally, we use recycled polyethylenetetraphyte (rPET) fabric. PET is the world’s fourth most common plastic resin and is used in everything from food packaging to clothing. Not only does rPET fabric contribute to reducing waste in our oceans and landfills, it’s production has 85% less energy requirements and 90% less water compared to virgin polyester.

3. Traditional crafting that minimises our carbon footprint

Every Mebala bag and accessory is handcrafted. This reliance on traditional crafting methods that have been trusted for thousands of years enables to minimise our energy usage and ultimately, our carbon footprint.

These are constant internal interrogations, and we will continue to work hand in hand with communities and organisations that help us produce in a manner that is considerate of our holistic impact on our planet.
